The designers' NYC penthouse opens up into a glass parlor that features a glass railing. Initially, neither Berkus nor Brent knew how to use the space and called it a design disaster because it had three entry points and many possible focal points. The couple decided to use the marble slab fireplace as their focal point and decorate around that and their multiple-story bookshelf. As per Architectural Digest, fans of the designers may recognize that they also had a marble fireplace in their previous Los Angeles house, making it one of their go-to design moves.
“Painful” is how Berkus, the family’s alpha layerer and collector-in-chief, describes the editing-down process. They moved some furniture to their offices, other pieces to storage, and sold still more on Berkus’s 1stdibs shop. But what you see is the best that we’ve got.” And with the designers’ addition of basket-weave grass-cloth wall covering, an 18th-century Italian mantel, and a plush mohair rug, the result is as handsome as rooms get.

Brent and Berkus proved you can go home again when they moved back into their old apartment, as they explained to Architectural Digest. According to the publication, they lived in the Greenwich Village home from 2013 through 2016. One of the first things the pair installed in the new home was a massive, double-height bookshelf in the living room. The shelves hold the family's most prized tomes, photo frames and pieces of pottery. Outside of the show, they operate their own design firms and have offices in L.A. They also juggle multiple licensing deals and a furniture collection.
The key is to keep the color palette limited throughout the house and to choose a unifying pattern or shape, like the curve of a sofa or chair. Additionally, homeowners will find it easier to mix time periods by matching wood types or keeping shades similar. They can do this by thrifting pieces and applying gel stains to give all the furniture a concise look .

To create a concise space, people must repeat colors throughout their design and wall paint. Colors can be carried from the front door to a kitchen counter or pillows. After selling the apartment, which was also featured on the cover of AD in 2015, they moved to Los Angeles and renovated a stunning Spanish Colonial villa. The couple lived on the West Coast for three years before realizing that New York would always be where their family belonged.

"We want to create spaces that represent the people who inhabit them and the moments that they're going to have and experience within those spaces," Berkus says. "There's really some tremendous power in living in a home that rises up to greet you." Ain't that the truth. Despite their similarities and sensitivities, they're both quick to admit their differences. Berkus stresses how distinctly different they are as people, which has helped them craft separate careers.
"We cross over when we can and when it's appropriate, whether it was the show or the furniture collection, and that's the fun stuff," he says. "That's when you just get to get in there and enjoy each other and create together, which we love to do." One thing Berkus credits his husband for is setting the tone of the house. As soon as he gets up each morning, Brent gets the environment ready for the kids with candles, music, and breakfast. "It changes the energy, and the kids just feel more relaxed, you know?" Berkus says smiling.
Early life and education
"The whole idea was an affordable luxury—creating sofas that look like Jean Michel Frank and they're like $1,000." Prior, I had been seated next to them at an event at the hip restaurantYsabelin 2016 , which opened for lunch especially for them. The event was intimate and exclusive, yet Berkus and Brent made me feel like we were old friends catching up at home after an extended break.
They missed the energy and diversity of New York, and thought it would be a better place to raise the kids. The design experts, who began dating and started their life together in New York, shared they decided to move West after Berkus's father died, to be closer to his family in Southern California. In March 2013, television journalists noted Berkus began working on a primetime series with NBC, initially titled Renovation Nation. So, they found a beautiful 1899 townhouse and moved back East, but not before realizing they were going to have to do a serious purge of their belongings — a process Berkus says was at times, "painful."

But the City of Angels just didn't feel like home in the same way. PEOPLE reported that the design experts sold the 19-century townhouse in August 2021 for $13.5 million in an off-market deal. They purchased it in April 2019 for $9.75 million, according to property records, and completed a major renovation.
In Oskar's nursery, Berkus hung a photograph by Fernando Bengoechea, his former partner who was killed in a tsunami in 2004. The piece is important to Berkus because his son Oskar is named after Fernando. However, the couple's son Oskar's room is decorated with a similarly inspired wallpaper and takes inspiration from retro red tones.
